Option Three:
Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (HVAC)
Standard in the Bensonwood This Old House Collection package is a super energy-efficient HVAC system that can save up to 60% on heating and cooling costs. This advanced system is comprised of an electrically-driven Acadia air source heat pump by Hallowell International for forced air heating, cooling and ventilation. (How does a heat pump work?) For those seeking conventional HVAC systems, we also offer the following options:
An air-source heat pump works in the same way a central AC compressor does—though it provides both heating and cooling. In summer it pumps inside heat to the outside through lines filled with refrigerant. In winter, the same pump extracts heat from the outside air and sends it inside.
Though it may be counterintuitive, even cold air contains significant amounts of heat, which the heat pump extracts, sending it to air handlers that blow the heated (or cooled air) through the home's ductwork. Humidifiers and filters are then used to treat the air.
The newest generation Hallowell International heat pump, called the Acadia, works even when the mercury outside drops to 30 degrees F below zero—not uncommon in Bangor, Maine ... where the company is located. Most importantly, this heat pump system can reduce heating and cooling costs by 60 percent.
