Careers

We are very proud of the company, community and culture we have built over our 30+ years in this business. Our dedication to great craftsmanship, open dialogue, trust, and companionship, combined with our facility in Walpole, New Hampshire, provide a fantastic working environment. Positions that are most often open are listed below. If you don't see a job description that matches your dream job, send your resume anyway! We are a company that tends to grow slowly, but evolve quickly, so we are constantly looking for new team members who can help us develop in the direction we intend. If we don't have any open positions now, we will contact you if we see a good fit.

Lead Engineer

We are seeking a full-time structural engineer to play a significant role in the company. This is a fast paced job where teamwork, decision-making skills, and salesmanship are just as important as the ability to engineer building solutions. Our preference is for a PE with +/-5 years experience, but we're primarily looking for exceptional skills and attitude.

Bensonwood is a design/build firm with a rich history of building high-end custom timberframed homes; we are also emerging as a leader in the techniques of panelized building and prefabrication using modular building blocks.

Though much of our work is in the residential sector, the Engineering Department is often called upon to design solutions for commercial and institutional buildings. While our principle structural medium is wood/timber, we also get involved with the engineering of concrete, steel and other building materials designed for panelization.

Bensonwood engineers work closely with the in-house architects for our residential clients, and they must engage with the architecture world-at-large to find, attract, and procure projects in the other building sectors, in order to keep the shop employees at full production.

The engineers of Bensonwood have been critical in the company's history; their design intuition and innovative structural solutions have been key factors in allowing the company to succeed. In addition to structural engineering knowledge, this candidate must have a strong sense of design and be able to communicate ideas clearly. We seek a person with leadership skills not only in regards to the work of contracted projects, but also in regards to the department and company development as a whole.

Drafter

This position involves checking dimensions, preparing structural, electrical and mechanical designs; drawing rough and detailed scale plans for foundations, floor plans, elevations, sections; assembling data to complete architectural designs; operating CADWORK for 3-D and 2-D design.  Activities include the use of drafting techniques, CADWORK drafting software, computers, spreadsheet software, and word processing; read blueprints, schematics, technical drawings; understand engineering data and construction specifications.

Requirements include a minimum of Associate’s Degree Architecture or Engineering; 5 years experience.

Residential Designer

Join our team to help make dreams become reality. Our goal is to develop the best timberframe architecture -- worthy of the quality produced by our craftspeople. Work is fast-paced and requires self-motivation, confidence and enthusiasm. Experience in construction and electronic drawings, AutoCAD r14/Ketiv and Cadwork preferred. Our design system makes use of our collective intelligence and years of experience. Residential design experience, code knowledge and construction detailing, along with an attitude to coexist with computers, is a must. Interior design and specification writing a plus. We work around the country in many beautiful places which deserve our best efforts and attention. Our style is rooted in the creation of timeless buildings - something we continue to strive and search for daily. We'd like to meet you if your ambitions run high and appetite to learn is abundant.

Timberframer

We, of course, think we have the best timberframe team in the country and we intend to keep it that way. We are looking for good learners who have something to contribute from the outset. Members of our timberframe team had different levels of woodworking and construction experience before joining us, but they all had a deep appreciation for the beauty and structural soundness of a timberframe home, and a passion for woodworking and craftsmanship. Our entry-level timberframers are trained on the job, but you do need to have basic hand tool and shop equipment skills, the ability to work at heights at our raisings, and knowledge about safe work habits. Of course, we look for trained timberframers, as well. You will be working closely with the team, but will be expected to manage yourself. There will be travel involved.

Project Steward

Bensonwood's Project Stewardship Department has grown in response to our clients' need for coordination and oversight of their projects. In addition to handling project management tasks relating to estimating, scheduling, specifications, contracts, and plan review, our project stewards are also the primary contact for the local builders with whom we work.

Helpful background experience for this role includes hands-on work in the trades, several years of supervising residential and/or commercial projects, strong organizing and communication skills, and facility with word processing and spreadsheets. Knowledge of Autocad is beneficial, but not critical.

While our project stewards spend most of their time working in our office, they also provide valuable support and coordination on site for our raising teams, local builders, and our clients. Team-building skills, basic carpentry skills, a willingness to travel, and job site "savvy" are all helpful.

We are always interested to talk with potential Bensonwood project stewards. If this brief description of our work resonates with you, and you feel that you might be a good fit, please drop us a line.

Building Systems Team Member

The Building Systems Department is responsible for the design and construction of our new wall panels, which are based on our Open-Built® design system. These panels help "disentangle" the structure, skin, and systems of a Bensonwood home.

We are accepting resumes for new Building Systems Developers. Building and installing foam-core panels will be the primary responsibilities for a new team member. General construction knowledge and basic carpentry skills are essential for someone coming into this role, as are basic math skills and the ability to work safely with portable and stationary power tools.

In general, all of our Open-Built® components are works-in-progress, and our Building Systems group is, in many ways, at the forefront of Bensonwood's current stage of evolution. A good team player with energy, excitement, and lots of patience, will thrive in this environment. Please let us know if you are interested.
