“Our friends warned us that building a custom home would be a difficult, nerve-racking experience. They were wrong! Building our dream home with Bensonwood was an enjoyable and satisfying experience.” – Bob A.

Our highly acclaimed in-house team of architects and designers stand ready to bring your home building dreams to life. Whether designing your home from scratch with one of our architects, working from your existing plans, or customizing a house in the Bensonwood Portfolio, our dedicated Design team will collaborate closely with you to ensure your home perfectly complements your lifestyle and excites your senses.
Your custom home will be designed to the exacting standards that have established Bensonwood as the leading designer/builder of energy-efficient, high-performance homes.
It Starts with an Idea
If you’re thinking of building your own home, you probably already have an idea of how it looks and how it works. The Bensonwood design team will collaborate with you, refining your ideas, filling in details, and creating plans based on your work. Early in the design process, you’ll be assigned a Project Manager, who will help you keep track of your budget and keep you up-to-date on scheduling. After a few rounds of review, your design will be ready for a hand-off to the Bensonwood Build Team.
From Plan to Reality
After you are happy with your design, the Bensonwood drafters and engineers create construction documents for your home. These are the working plans from which your home will be built. A job captain from our shop will take charge of your home, overseeing the component construction in our shops. Your project manager and designer will continue to work with you, finalizing decisions on interior and exterior finishes, fixtures, and the other things that turn a house into a home.
The foundation is poured, your house components are wrapped up and on a truck. It is time for you to be on site to watch the Bensonwood crew put your house up. Few things are as impressive as a Bensonwood house raising; not because it is flashy, rather because it is so efficient. A typical house goes from a prepped foundation to a weathertight shell in about a week. Usually, the loudest thing on site is the crane motor, and the biggest trash can is a 55-gallon drum.
After the weathertight shell is up, the specialists will arrive, finishing the plumbing, interior and exterior finishes, wiring, and HVAC. Your project manager will oversee the subcontractors, and will be available to you to answer any questions. Depending on the size and complexity of your home, this finish-out work can take as little as three or four weeks (more complex homes can take several months). Landscape work usually happens concurrently with the finish work.
Finally, you’ll be able to move in. Since we’re proud of our work, and we’re always looking for feedback, we may schedule a visit with you after you’ve settled in. We’ll take some photos, your architect will walk through the house with you to find out what you like best about your new home. And if you have any questions or need anything, we’re always just a phone call (or e-mail) away.
