Open-Built® — The 3D Grid

Even in highly customized homes there are predictable structure patterns and common elements. For example, a comfortable stair height (and one that meets building codes) is 7.5 in. With the Open-Built® grid, the distance between floors is always set in multiples of 7.5 in., which means every stair design Bensonwood has in the Open-Built® catalog will fit between the floors. Whenever we design new stairs, they will fit the same grid and be available from the electronic catalog for new home designs. If an architect or someone in the shop develops a way to build that stair element more efficiently or with higher quality, Open-Built® electronically catalogs it for future use.
The grid system forms hundreds of quadrants that are idealized to the structure of a home as detailed in the stair example.
