Master Craftsmanship

Award-winning custom building since 1973

“Working with Tedd Benson and his staff, we’ve been able to design and make a barn out of new wood that’s been made to look and feel old, a functional space that evokes not only the ancient barns of New England but its spiritual spaces as well.”   –  Filmmaker Ken Burns

What We Build

We make sustainable custom buildings and other structures throughout the country.  When approaching residential, commercial or public projects, their beauty, health, comfort, energy efficiency and “seventh generation” durability are the pillars upon which we build. In our 40+ year history, we have designed, engineered and constructed over 1,000 structures of every size and for every budget. Known for reviving timber framing in America, as well as for our high-performance building envelopes, Bensonwood’s innovative solutions to building problems have attracted the attention and collaboration of some of America’s leading architects, as well as MIT, Unity College, and HUD’s PATH initiative.

When you begin a project with Bensonwood, you have access to our team of designers, architects, and project managers, who will use their years of industry experience to shepherd your project from initial conception through construction. Your project manager and project job captain will oversee your project both in our shops and on-site, leading to a smooth, rapid construction schedule.

How We Build

Bensonwood is a design/build firm. We will work with you to create your building, whether you are starting with a blank slate, or are already working with an architect or designer. Our design systems and build process are closely aligned, leading to great efficiencies in both; we call this closely-linked system “Montage Building”. If you are already working with an architect (or are an architect yourself), you can design within our guidelines, guaranteeing that your structure will be both beautiful and easy to build.
