A hand-painted sign down by the Nantucket ferry dock used to read: “Boat to America.” Nantucket is far enough out in the ocean that it almost feels life foreign territory – a place with its own unique culture and its own way of doing things. In the old days, the island’s wealth came from whaling. Seafaring men were pragmatic about design but demanding about construction quality. When the going gets rough, they knew what mattered. Today, land values are the real wealth on Nantucket, yet the houses being built there clearly grow out of the whaling heritage. Drawing from that history, this house was built to ship standards, prepared to face the open ocean with integrity and respect.
