The largest of the three plans, this design is divided into two elements, shared and private, offset into a dynamic form with plenty of natural daylight throughout. The exterior patio is framed on two sides by the house and creates additional space for gathering.

The Bensonwood Connection
Lake Flato’s partnership with Bensonwood began with Clinton Corners, a house in the Hudson Valley of New York that combined an ambitious eight-month construction schedule with the highest standards for energy performance and indoor air quality. Since the initial collaboration, Lake Flato has continued to collaborate with Bensonwood on residential projects including the North Fork, High Meadow, and Harbor Watch residences. Their collaborative cultures and passion for detailed and efficient construction processes mirror each other, creating a successful partnership built on mutual respect and trust.
Recent Awards
Lake Flato has been honored with over 400 design awards, including the American Institute of Architects Firm of the Year Award in 2004 and 16 Top Ten Project Awards from the AIA Committee on the Environment. Twenty years after receiving the AIA’s Firm of the Year Award, David Lake and Ted Flato were honored with the 2024 Gold Medal, the AIA’s honest honor, recognizing individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Lake Flato has also received the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, was named one of the Ten Most Innovative Architecture Firms in the World by Fast Company, and placed 1st in Architect Magazine’s 2019 Top 50, an annual ranking of the best U.S. firms.
Meet The Team
Ted Flato
FAIA
Ted Flato, FAIA has received critical acclaim for his straight-forward regional designs which incorporate indigenous building forms and materials and respond to the context of their unique landscapes. With Lake Flato co-founder David Lake, he was named 2024's Gold Medal recipient, the highest honor conferred by the American Institute of Architects.
By applying sustainable strategies to a wide variety of building types and scales, Ted seeks to conserve energy and natural resources while creating healthy built environments. His interest in a myriad of building systems has resulted in projects ranging from mass timber, prefabrication and 3D printing, among other building systems.
Laura Kaupp Jensen
AIA
An Associate Partner in Lake Flato’s residential studio, Laura enjoys closely collaborating with clients in the design of thoughtful, comfortable homes that embrace their unique contextual landscape. Laura started her career in Annapolis, Maryland learning the craft of early American architecture and working within a historical context. Returning to her Texas roots, she continues to be inspired by vernacular forms and their response to a particular climate and place.
Matt Cooper
AIA
Matt's background as a furniture designer/maker and a residential carpenter has given him a deep appreciation for how important the 'joinery' of a building is to its success architecturally. While earning his Master of Architecture at the University of New Mexico he had the opportunity to travel throughout Japan, seeing first-hand the elegance of both the traditional and modern buildings there. His architectural philosophy centers on the pressing issues of climate change and how the profession can best respond. Matt is a licensed architect in Texas and New York.
