Crested Butte Timber
Crested Butte, Colorado

Description
Set on Mt. Crested Butte, this custom timber frame home reflects a vision that was decades in the making. Homeowners Rick and Carolyn first connected with Bensonwood’s approach to building after Rick attended a timber framing course with Tedd Benson in the 1980s. Their commitment to an energy-efficient, high-performance home came full circle with this project.
In a region defined by labor shortages and a short building season, our panelized approach offered a clear advantage—allowing a four-person Bensonwood crew to raise the home in under four weeks. The site’s panoramic view up a river valley offers a striking backdrop for a home designed for comfort and performance. As the first all-electric residence on the mountain, it features an efficient air-to-water heating system and a solar array. Together, these help make the home as low impact as possible, setting a precedent in an area where large expansive homes typically do not prioritize energy efficiency.
Inside, the home showcases extensive Bensonwood-crafted architectural millwork, including trim, interior doors, a high-performance entry door and a wood staircase. Among the many crafted details, a hand-carved Hopi Sun symbol adds a meaningful finishing touch from our timber framing team.
